Abstract: | From Avicenna’s review of the definition of the soul as the first perfection of a natural body in his On Soul (Kitāb al-Nafs), I will discuss some assumptions from which his position isbuilt. The argumentation in his On Soul I.1 is clear only if we understand the meaning of the term ‘substance’ used by Avicenna and if we restrict the investigation about the substantiality of the soul to the human soul. At the end of my analysis, I shallargue that the human soul does not exist separated from the body and that its investigation competes to physics. |
