Abstract: | Kraft pulping is the most widespread and utilized process for cellulosic production and is extensively used in the manufacturing of paper products around the world. This process involves digesting wood in a solution of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide, followed by delignification, purification and washing, bleaching, drying and chemical recovery. And washup, and washing, bleaching, drying and chemical recovery. The cellulose and paper industries have long been considered strong contributors to the economy since 18th century, however, it wasn’t until the 1960s that the implementation of scientific reasoning in the manufacturing process began. With the scientific and technological revolution, came the task of recognizing the significant environmental impacts of using non- renewable resources and their emissions into the atmosphere and bodies of water. The tool of life cycle assessment (LCA) is basead on determining the environmental burdens associated with a product, service or process, from inception to the disposal, in other words, it plays a fundamental role in the evaluation and decision-making concerning industry and natural enviroment. The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate which environmental impacts are connected to the production of cellulose at the Suzano Papel e Celulose Três Lagoas Unit - MS. Within the LCA methodology described in the article, the ReCiPe midpoint LCA method was used through the SimaPro software for data processing. It is noteworthy that there was a positive impact on global warming due to the planting of eucalyptus used for cellulose production, showing a negative balance value in terms of Kg CO2 equivalent. For future work, it is recommended to show another scenario with emission controls to compare with the data generated in the present work, as well as other pulping processes. |
