Abstract: The research deals with the theme of the school institution and its representation by undergraduate students mediated by photographic images. The objective is to analyze how these subjects directly involved with school educational activities build their representations about the basic education school in a dialectical perspective that can turn to both criticism and praise directed at this institution that has controversial social functions. As theoretical references, aesthetic-philosophical foundations related to Walter Benjamin´s thought were adopted, concepts such as: dialectical image, game, image-thought, technique and second technique, and Vilém Flusser´s concepts such as: technical image, game and dialectic of images which were incorporated in the production and reading of images constructed by the research subjects. The problem that guided the investigation was: how and degree students represent the school institution of basic education mediated by the production of technical images. As results of the investigation, we present a critical reading of the images produced by the subjects, highlighting the dialectical reading of the images and the construction of clarification about the social role played by the school, even in difficult times. From this reading of images, it was concluded that the way in which the school institution is seen by the subjects of education directly interferes with the educational processes that occur within the school, requiring further investigation of these in order to develop a defense of school education that promote equal education and the commonplace of education as a public good.
