Abstract: The animal nutrition has been shown as an effective ally in the treatment of heart diseases in dogs and cats complementing the therapy. Dietary factors may be capable of modulating agents that cause heart disease, slowing its progression, reducing the amount of drugs for treatment and improving quality of life. The use of essential fatty acids, antioxidants, arginine, coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, taurine and vitamin B has been widely studied in the prevention and treatment of many types of heart diseases in small animals. Thus, this review will address options for dietary supplements highlighting for the veterinarians the importance of nutritional therapy for animals with heart disease.
