Abstract: Cosmic rays are classified into two types: primary cosmic rays and secondary cosmic rays. Primary cosmic rays constantly reach Earth and are classified as follows: solar, anomalous and of galactic origin. These secondary cosmic rays are products of the interactions between the atmosphere and the primary cosmic rays. From these interactions the air shower of particles are produced. In this work atmospheric muons are studied by simulating protons as primary cosmic rays with energies of 6 GeV and 1000 GeV. This work presents the first result on the incidence of muons in the city of Lavras, state of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, compared to other locations. We use the simulation to propose and explanation to the excess in the expected number of muons in the Southern Hemisphere and its relationship to the South Atlantic Anomaly
