Abstract: Poly (lactic acid) - PLA is a biodegradable polymer obtained from renewable sources and marketed worldwide on a large scale. It has the most diverse applications such as packaging, household items, and biomedical parts. PLA is a safe and economically viable material for human health. In addition, it is resistant to bacteria and fungi, stable, and maintains its properties for years, which allows it to be safely used for food packaging. Research is being conducted to improve PLA performance in sustainable food packaging applications such as blending development. Blends reduce cost and improve material flexibility and strength. The use of PLA encourages the use and expansion of agriculturally based materials. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present an overview and current about PLA, its application in food packaging and future perspective.
