Abstract: Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) of the family Asteraceae is the leafy vegetable most consumed in Brazil. Cultivars produced commercially, such as: crisp, smooth, American, and more recently, Romaine have been produced for the supply of niche markets seeking minimally processed vegetables and ready for consumption. This is a culture very demanding in nutrients and, in particular, nitrogen which presents challenges to the supply. Thus, this work aimed at studying the behavior of Romaine lettuce cultivars at different doses of slow- release nitrogen (SRN), and to evaluate the residual effect of the SRN. Two experiments were conducted from October 2010 to February 2011, in a factorial scheme (7x4) with 7 cultivars of Romaine and four doses of SRN (100, 200, 300 and 400 L ha-1). In the first experiment, we observed a linear effect for total fresh production and trade. The same can be observed for the residual effect of SRN in the second experiment, since the increase in the number of inner leaves does not follow the same trend.
