Abstract: The dust collected in the exhaust treatment system of blast furnace has disposal problems due to large quantities and potential environmental pollution. This study was done to determine the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the dust collected in the balloon used to treat the exhaust from the blast furnace of a steel plant and assess its ability to adsorb phosphorus to determine the adsorption isotherm that best fit the data. The total concentration of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, Al, Mg, Ca, K and P was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry after nitric-perchloric digestion of the sample. The mineralogical analysis was done with the help of a X-ray diffractometer. The residue predominantly consisted of hematite and magnetite containing high levels of Fe, Ca, Cr and Mg, and had high pH, and high phosphorus adsorption capacity. The Langmuir and Freundlich models fitted the data reasonably well to represent the adsorption isotherm.
