Abstract: Conjugated polymers are organic materials with an extended π-electron conjugation, displaying a structure which can give rise to novel electrical, optical and magnetic phenomena. The possibility of molecular engineering such materials, allied to the fact that their conductivity can be adjusted from insulators to metals by different doping methods, have lead to a myriad of applications, especially in sensors and biosensors The intensive scientific investigation over the last two decades surpassed several initial limitations regarded to the processing of these polymers, which could hamper some applications. The field of applications of conjugated polymers has been growing up quickly in the last years including a widening area of topics. As an example, one can verify the copious amount of papers published over the last years on this subject. From the vastness of the literature involved with conjugated polymers, the text presented here shows the basic concepts of conjugated polymers and their applications in sensors and biosensors will be the subject of further publications in this journal.
