Abstract: The effects of Trifluralin, used as an inhibitor of root intrusion in sub-surface drip irrigation (SDI), were evaluated at the initial growth of coffee (Coffea Arabica L.) plants cultivated in an Oxisol soil. The SDI system consisted of 15 meter long drip tape with 1.0 L/H outlets located at every 45 cm, installed 20 cm apart from the plant row at 20 cm deep. Trifluralin was tested in four doses (0.00; 0.05; 0.15or 0.25 mL a.i. per dripper) and 3 frequencies (3, 6 and 12 month interval) with 4 replications each. The results revealed that up to 18 months after planting, no reduction in plant growth was observed, even for the highest application dose (0.25 mL a.i. per dripper). No clogging was observed as a result of root intrusion, even with no application of Trifluralin.
