Abstract: Experimental planningis a crucial step for thecorrectdevelopmentofscientificresearch. The use ofthe central composite design (CCD) associatedwiththe response surfacemethodology (RSM) hasbeenincreasing in severalresearchareas. The objectiveofthisworkwastosystematizetheliteraturepublishedonthe use of CCD and RSM in thelast 5 years. For thispurpose, a systematicliterature review waspreparedusingtheStArt (StateoftheArtthroughSystematic Review)software. Followingthe PRISMA flowchart, searcheswereperformed in 3 databases (Science Direct, Scopusand Web of Science), basedoninclusionandexclusioncriteria. In thescreeningandselectionstages, duplicatearticles, book chapters, reviews andincompletearticleswereremoved. Of a total of 959 articlesfoundandexamined, 111 wereeligibletothestudyof CCD and RSM. Eligiblearticleshighlightthat CCD and RSM are methodologiesthatcomplementeachother. The mostusedtypesof CCD wererotational (68.5%) and face-centered (20.7%). These designs wereoptimizedbetween 2 to 6 factorssimultaneously, with a numberof experimental trialsrangingfrom 9 to 47. CCDandRSMwereapplied in differentareasofknowledge, withemphasisonpharmacy (drugformulation) andenvironmental (contaminantremoval), toreducethecostsofexperimentsandobtainoptimized responses to solve problems. Statistically, the data fromthe CCD are subjectedto ANOVA thatgenerates a quadraticpolynomialmodel, managingthecreationofthe MSR. A critical point identified in this review isthe use ofpaid software toevaluateCCDandcreateRSM. Alternatively, the use offreeor open source software such as R and Python canbeanalternativeto solve this problem. Thisworkcontributestotheunderstandingofthe use ofCCDandRSM as a methodology for experimentoptimization.
