Abstract: This study investigated the perception of 4th year elementary school students in relation to thecollection and separation of solid waste and the work of ASCAR recyclable materialcollectors, in the municipality of Carmópolis de Minas. The research highlighted the importance of Environmental Education as a fundamental tool to raise awareness and promote a critical view among children on the issue of solid waste and the essential role of collectors in society. The study demonstrated that, by being exposed to educational activities and environmental practices, children developed a deeper understanding of the negative impacts of consumerism and the importance of recycling. The visit to ASCAR, in particular, was a crucial point forstudents to acquire a more humanized view of waste pickers, starting to value the work of these professionals as essential for sustainability and environmental preservation. In addition to analyzing the students' perception, the study also outlined a profile of ASCAR collectors, revealing the precarious working conditions and lack of social recognition they face. The data highlighted the need for public policies that promote the socioeconomic inclusion of waste pickers, improving their working conditions and ensuring that they receive due recognition for their contributions to the environment. The research concluded that it is essential to introduce the topic of solid waste appropriately in schools from an early age.Environmental Education, when well implemented, has the potential to transform children's perceptions, making them agents of change who value the environment and the work of collectors. The involvement of families in this process is equally important, since sustainable attitudes must be encouraged in both the school and home environments. By promoting awareness and appreciation of the work of waste pickers, this study contributes to the construction of a fairer and more sustainable society, where social inclusion and environmental conservation are priorities shared by all.
