Abstract: | This study evaluated the characteristics of activated carbon (AC) produced from sawdust from the timber industry of the Amazon region. Sawdust from massaranduba [ Manilkara huberi (Ducke) Chevalier] were collected, characterized chemically (ABNT-NBR14853, NBR7989 and NBR13999), transformed into activated carbon through carbonization process (500°C, 1.65°C.min-1, for 30 min) and activated via physical process (850°C, 10°C.min-1 for 60 min), CO2 (150 ml.min-1) and then the adsorbent properties of the AC by the BET isotherm and kinetics of adsorption (methylene blue and phenol)were determined. The results demonstrated that the AC presents a high microporosity; shows a certain amunt of mesopores with a the superficial area of 697.30 m².g-1; the AC presents a high adsorption capacity in relation to the isotherms of methylene blue (above 900 mg.g-1) and phenol (above 280 mg.g-1). It was concluded that the species possesses quite a promising potential for use in the production of activated carbon with high added value. Additional studies are being conducted on the parameters of carbonization and activation in order to optimize the production and quality of activated carbon. |
