| Abstract: | This paper presents a proposal for classifying alternating verbs in relation to its ‘basic form’ of transitivity. Based on the analysis of lexical-semantics properties entailed by Brazilian Portuguese causative verbs, it is assumed that transitivity can be described not only in syntactic terms but also through semantic properties. The relevant semantic property for transitivity and the general processes responsible for transitivity alternations are also shown. |
