Abstract: | This article analyzes the emergence of the post-vocalic lateral in L2-English spoken by Brazilians. Considering that a post-vocalic lateral does not occur in L1-BP (Brazilian Portuguese), its occurrence in L2 involves the emergence of this category. Th is article evaluates the pathways that promote the emergence of the post-vocalic lateral in English-L2, assuming the theoretical approaches of Complex Adaptive Systems and Dynamic Models (ALBANO, 2012; BYBEE, 2001, 2010; ELLIS; ROBINSON, 2008; LARSENFREEMAN, 1997). Results indicate that time of exposure to L2 and the individual (learner) are statistically significant factors for the emergence of a post-vocalic lateral in L2-English by Brazilian speakers. On the other hand, the results for the lexical item were not statically significant. The findings presented in this paper are in line with the perspective that suggests that segmental emergence, more specifically of the post-vocalic lateral in L2-English, reflects the dynamic and complex self-organization of the phonological system of the learner through time, as well as with the specifi city of the individual in the construction of grammatical knowledge. |
