Duplo-haploides: estratégias para obtenção e importância no melhoramento genético do milho

Abstract

The production of haploid individuals and subsequent chromosome doubling to obtain double haploids (DH) in maize has created great interest in the scientific community. The technique can reduce the time and costs to obtain pure lines, and improve the efficiency on the production of new hybrid cultivars. Apparently the technique is dominated by multinational seed corporations, but for small seed companies and public sector there are still some obstacles to make it viable for all breeding program. This review attempts to show up how to obtain double haploids, the difficulties of the process and the challenges to be overcome.
